CHARACTERISTICS OF WOOD Cabinetry by Karman takes pride in producing a product that you will be proud to have in your home. When building product from wood it is important to understand general characteristics of each wood species. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the beauty of wood and wood products.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS Natural hardwood products are never as uniform as plastic laminate or wallpaper found in a catalog. Solid hardwood products, like other natural products, are shaped by natural forces and may display a variety of character markings and colors. Each wood species has unique features such as density, colors and grain patterns. Color variation is influenced by moisture, exposure to sunlight and mineral content of the soil. Grain patterns are affected by changes in climate, growth rate, damage, as well as soil conditions. Different saw cuts also help determine the grain pattern and color. All woods change color over time and the change varies depending on species, exposure to natural light and the amount and color of finish applied, among other things. All of these variations contribute to the uniqueness of the beauty and essence of natural wood.
Before making a final selection of what type of wood species and finish you prefer we recommend you view the largest sample available in order to understand all of the features a wood species may offer.
OAK (RED OAK) Oak is a hard, heavy wood which results in great wear resistance. Color ranges from white to light brown to a pinkish reddish brown. However, oak has a generally consistent color that makes it a good choice for cabinetry. This wood may contain mineral streaks and some pin knots. The grain characteristics range from straight to irregular.
Rustic Oak displays pins knots, larger knots, mineral streaks and other natural color variations throughout the wood.
MAPLE (HARD MAPLE) Maple is hard and heavy with good strength properties, in particular it's high resistance to abrasion and wear. The raw wood color ranges from near white to a dark reddish brown. The wood has a close fine texture and is generally straight grained. Maple tends to change to a yellow or orange color over time. Common characteristics include mineral streaks and pin knots.
Rustic Maple product will show mineral streaks, pin knots and larger closed knots.
ALDER Alder is a relatively soft hardwood of medium density. Natural color variations range from light brown to a reddish brown. Alder is fairly straight grained with a uniform texture. This wood may have pin knots and mineral streaks.
Rustic Alder has larger open and closed knots of various sizes. Mineral streaks and other natural variations help create the personality of this product.
